    1. This beautiful oversized book is based on the discovery of forgotten glass plate negatives found in the basement of a Chicago Sanitary District building At the turn of the twentieth century the city of Chicago, in a bid to provide their citizens with healthier water, performed an unprecedented feat of engineering they reversed the course of the heavily polluted Chicago River, so that it flowed westward away from the city, instead of into Lake Michigan, from where the city drew its water. This sto [...]

    2. Photos taken in the early 1900s documenting the construction of the IM Canal, which reversed the Chicago River I thought it was reversed by raising the city which didn t really make sense , but that was just to install sewers for drainage The drainage basin for the Chicago River to Lake Michigan and the Mississippi via the Illinois River are divided by a low ridge in what today is Summit So, by making a canal that was lower and large enough, it drained water away The photos of turn of the centur [...]

    3. Love, love, LOVED this book When I picked it up from the library I was planning on skimming through the text and looking at the pictures I read every word and didn t want it to end A great history not only of Chicago but Illinois as well The format was awesome, you could refer to the map as you were reading along to see exactly where thing were located I highly recommend this book

    4. Wonderful historical images of the reversal of the Chicago River in 1894 At the time this was known as The Eighth Wonder of The World for the engineering feats it took to accomplish the project Seeing it in modern terms, we are now able to recognize the environmental impact. Here s a link to a video interview of the authors youtu Y2DLLaVg9eQ

    5. I skimmed this mostly to read the captions with the pictures No surprise that flooding, contamination, and lawsuits followed the change in direction of the Chicago River as it flows down the Illinois to the Mississippi.

    6. A beautiful presentation of long forgotten historical photos, along with a short, clearly written history of the Chicago River s reversal.

    7. An interesting browsing book for anyone interested in the history of Chicago Large format really showcases the crystal clear photos.
